ST4917 : The Elizabethan East fašade of Montacute House

The Elizabethan East façade of Montacute House
The Elizabethan East fašade of Montacute House
This view of the East Fašade shows the gated entry into the formal garden. The gate stands at the site of a former gatehouse which gave entry to a great courtyard containing the main doorway into the house. All this changed upon the construction of the western face in the late 18th century. This then became the principle entrance to the house and the gatehouse was demolished and the once great court became a back garden. All that remains of the old grandeur are the two domed pavilions just out of sight left and right. See ST5017 : Fine display of tulips in the formal garden at Montacute House
