Statue, Scottish Provident, Belfast

See J3374 : The Scottish Provident Institution, Belfast. This statue, at the corner of Donegall Square West and Wellington Place was described by the late Sir Charles Brett as “a semi-nude lady doing her hair; a small boy imitating her; and another lady looking on in surprise”. The mesh protects the statue against roosting starlings and the ghosts of architectural historians.
The Scottish Provident Building, Belfast

The Scottish Provident Building was built between 1897 and 1902. A triumphant finale to the Victorian era it announces its greatness over more than half of Donegall Square West. It is so rich in architectural detail that it would warrant its own book. This is a collection of photographs mainly showing the extravagant detail present in the building.
