Pool Quarry railway bridge abutments
This rather mediocre photograph, taken into the sun, shows the abutments of the bridge which once carried a narrow gauge railway over the main A660 Otley - Leeds road. The railway was built to transport stone from Pool Quarry to Pool Station on the joint Midland and North Eastern Railway, 300 feet below and a mile away from the quarry. An incline was built and operated by gravity: loaded wagons would descend and pull empties up. The bridge shown here was built in 1890, replacing a level crossing which crossed the road at such an angle that a turntabe was needed.
Pool Quarries closed in 1915, but reopened in 1920 and remained in operation between the wars. The bridge lasted until 1941, when it was dismantled for scrap to aid the war effort. Most of this information was lifted from
