Chinnor, post mill - the post
Chinnor, post mill - the post
The big piece of vertical wood is the eponymous post that gives the mill type its name. It articulates with the horizontal crown tree above and carries the weight of the buck. At Chinnor the weight is also carried at two points of contact below. There is a lightning protection system fitted - many mills have been lost for want of adequate protection. One of the two tuns is seen to the right and the great spur wheel is just visible at the bottom. This mill is a reconstruction of the mill that was across the road until the 1960s. Much of the material is new but the restorers are staying true to the original.
