Shipbuilding was a major industry in Beverley until economic conditions led to the closure of the shipyard at Grove Hill in 1977. The site was later developed as the Acorn Industrial Estate. Small-scale shipbuilding and repair work continues on the river Hull immediately north of Grove Hill bridge.
