A horses view of a chase fence at Fakenham Racecourse
This fence is on the home straight with the winning post just beyond the fence in the distance.
There are 3 types of races that take place on National Hunt racecourses.
A chase takes place over larger fixed fences, such as this one, which will not fall over if hit by a horse.
A hurdle race takes place over lower more forgiving fences which are usually hurdles or gates covered in brushwood that are hammered into the ground and will fall over if a horse hits them too hard.
A National Hunt flat race, as the name suggests, does not involve jumping any fences and is often known as a bumper race and usually involves less experienced horses and are run as the last race at most race meetings.
