Belle Isle from Cockshott Point
Belle Isle from Cockshott Point
Belle Isle is the largest of 18 islands on Windermere, and the only one that is inhabited.
It used to be entitled Great Island, but was renamed by a certain John Christian, who owned it in the late 18th century, after his wife Isabella.
The island is private, and landing on it is forbidden - or regarded as trespass.
