Ministry of Supply Factory, Valley, Rhydymwyn: entrance to central tunnel
This is the entrance to the central tunnel, one of three such tunnels built from 1939 onwards by the Halkyn & District United Mining company by blasting into the hillside with dynamite. On completion the complex consisted of two 4m wide outer tunnels each 250m long, and a similar length but slightly wider 5m central tunnel, each linked to the other by four storage caverns cut at right angles. It was here that mustard gas in its various forms was stored. As well as bulk storage of mustard gas, chemically charged weapons in the form of 30 and 250lb LC bombs, and 250, 500, 1000 and 2000lb chemical sprayers (SCI) for the RAF were also stored here, as well as artillery shells for use by the Army.
