Interior of St James Church, Cooling
St James Church at Cooling is one of the churches which it is thought featured in the opening scenes of Great Expectations (St Mary's at Higham is the other). Charles Dickens describes the lozenge graves by the door as ‘"little stone lozenges each about a foot and a half long, which were arranged in a neat row beside their [parents’] graves" - see Link

The church dates from the 14th century and the chancel from about 1260. See more at: LinkExternal link (Archive LinkExternal link )

St James Church is now looked after by the Churches Conservation Trust - see LinkExternal link
