South end of Clayton Street, Newcastle
This view is looking down the street to the junction with Westgate Road. There are two famous buildings here, at least to older people locally. The shops on the right were once the home of Jackson The Tailor. This firm had a string of tailors shops right across the north east, in the days when all men wore tailored suits. Jackson's catered for the ordinary man, with reasonable prices. This shop contained their head offices, and the founder himself lived on the top floor. All gone now of course. The other notable building is the left hand one of the two turreted buildings. This was the Northern Goldsmiths, again very famous locally back in the 2oth century.
