Askeaton Friary
Askeaton Friary
This Franciscan friary was founded in 1389 by Gerald "the poet", 4th Earl of Desmond. During the Desmond rebellion of 1579, a government army under Sir Nicholas Malby attacked Askeaton. The town and friary was burned, and several of the monks massacred. The friary was re-established in 1627, and continued until its demise in 1740.
