Batches of needles were placed into a cloth in a former together with carborundum powder and liquid soap. The package is bound and tightly tied off with the sisal cord using the end posts on the bench. Further soap is added to lubricate the bundle.

The bundle was rolled for up to 24 hours to polish the needles.
