The Pennine Way alongside Light Hazzles Reservoir
The Pennine Way alongside Light Hazzles Reservoir
The Pennine Way above Littleborough runs alongside reservoirs that are among the earliest built in the North of England, including the Blackstone Edge and Light Hazzles* reservoirs dating from the late eighteenth century. They were originally built (along with Warland, Chelburn and White Holme reservoirs) to supply water to the Rochdale Canal to ensure the flow of water in the canal, which is 600 feet above sea level at Summit. The five reservoirs, along with the water of Hollingworth Lake were jointly purchased from the Rochdale Canal Company by Rochdale and Oldham Corporations in 1923 (LinkExternal link (Archive LinkExternal link ) Link4Life, Water Supply in Rochdale).

*The name is shown on maps as “Light Hazzles” but the United Utilities sign at the reservoir concatenates this to “Lighthazzles”.
The Pennine Way

The Pennine Way is a National Trail in England, with a small section in Scotland. The trail runs 267 miles from Edale, in the northern Derbyshire Peak District, north through the Yorkshire Dales and the Northumberland National Park and ends at Kirk Yetholm, just inside the Scottish border. The path runs along the Pennine hills, sometimes described as the "backbone of England". Although not the United Kingdom's longest National Trail, it is according to the Ramblers' Association "one of Britain's best known and toughest".
