TQ0614 : Parham - The main house
taken 8 years ago, near to Rackham, West Sussex, England
The main bulk of the house was built by Sir Thomas Palmer from 1577 onwards, but on the site of a mediaeval manor dating back to the C13th, parts of which may have been incorporated into the fabric of the east wing.
In 1597 it was sold by Sir Thomas's grandson to Sir Thomas Bisshopp. The Bisshopp family lived here for over 300 years, finally selling to the present owners in 1922. The Bisshopps succeeded to the Barony of Zouche in 1815.
It is a very fine old building - considered one of the top 20 by Simon Jenkins in his 1000 best houses in England - and has been carefully restored by the family that took it over - The Hon. Clive Pearson and his descendants, who still live there today although it is now looked after by a trust.
It is open regularly to the public, and has been ever since 1946 - see their website Link
The main house is Grade I listed Link and it is set in a Grade II* listed park Link
The C18th stable block is also Grade I listed Link as is the nearby parish church Link within the house's grounds.
