Lindisfarne Monastery was sacked by the Vikings in 793 and it was lamenting the loss of life that the name Holy Island was bestowed, as the ground had been soaked in holy blood. These are the ruins of the later priory. For another view of the ruins refer to picture NU1241 : Lindisfarne Priory.
