Wheal Grey - engine house
Wheal Grey - engine house
Although one thinks of metalliferous mines being associated with Cornish beam pumping engines, they were used for a wide variety of drainage operations. This particular site was where china clay was first exploited in Cornwall and is well west of the traditional St Austell area associated with this mineral. The flooded clay pit remains nearby and the flooded engine shaft is still open. The engine was built as a rotative stamps engine by Charlestown Foundry for Polgooth Mine and was then used at two further sites before being installed here as a pumping engine in 1897-98. It had a 36" cylinder. It was scrapped in 1935. The house with adjoining boiler house and chimney has survived well. This is the rear view from the public road and the shaft is at the opposite end.
