Brochs are common in the north and west of Scotland and date from the Iron Age period about 2300-1900BP. They are tall, double-skinned stone structures, with passageways and steps between the two walls to allow access to the different levels of the building. Most are now in various states of collapse. The remains at Struan are quite accessible, about 220m [uphill] from the car park, and there are traces of other buildings nearby.
