Fireless Steam at Waterside
Fireless Steam at Waterside
Fireless steam locomotive No8, an 0-4-0 built in Kilmarnock by Andrew Barclay, was running at the Scottish Industrial Railway Centre’s open day at Waterside in May 2016. Powered by steam contained in a large tank, these locomotives were used to maintain safety in situations with explosion risks, such as underground coal mines or munitions factories. There was no risk from a fireless locomotive, as a tank of hot water and steam cannot explode and the engine could not produce sparks. The demonstration at Waterside, hauling a gunpowder wagon, certainly was authentic. No8 is the only operational fireless locomotive in Britain.
