Cowgate, Peterborough
Cowgate, Peterborough
Contrary to appearances, this was once a vitally important route into Peterborough. Now it's an insignificant one way street populated by estate agents, charity shops, commercial premises "to let" and a single solitary pub, but its route was laid out in the 11th Century by Martin de Bec, Abbot of Peterborough, who continued the rebuilding of the city which was instigated by his predecessor as Abbot, Ernulf. Cowgate has been home to a police station, the council office, a fish market and the town's Corn Exchange which opened in 1848 and was used as a venue for such diverse events as boxing matches and dances as well as its primary function as a trading hall.
