Whilst its mate (SD6301 : Black-headed Gulls at Bickershaw Lake) flew off, this Black-headed Gull was inquisitive enough to allow me to approach more closely.

Definitely not a 'seagull', the Black-headed Gull (whose head is actually more of a chocolate-brown colour than black) is the commonest inland gull, particularly in Northern England, Scotland and Wales (LinkExternal link - RSPB).

As is the case with many gulls, it had previously been placed in the genus Larus.
Queen's Park, Bolton
Queen’s Park is to the west of Bolton town centre, between Chorley New Road and Spa Road. Prior to being made into a park, the site was pasture land known as Spa Fields.

When it was first opened. in 1866, the park was called Bolton Park; it was renamed as Queen’s Park in 1897 in recognition of Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee. The park has recently been refurbished with support from the Heritage Lottery Fund.
