The church of St Margaret was built in 1837 on land given by Hornby Roughsedge whose memorial is in the chancel. It was a chapel of ease to St John the Baptist, Low Bentham and designed in lancet style by George Webster. The building was extended in 1902.
The church stands on high ground above the river outside the village of High Bentham. It was soon separated from the village by the railway line that opened in 1850. After 150 years of use it was reordered in the 1980s and 1990s, and was listed grade 2 in 1988 (list entry 1132420).
The church was closed for public worship on 1 April 2014 and sold in 2017 for conversion to residential use.The closed churchyard is maintained by the local authority.
