SK6471 : Lake on the River Meden at Perlethorpe

taken 8 years ago, near to Perlethorpe, Nottinghamshire, England

There has been a lot of rain, and there is a bank constructed around the edge so it is perhaps a flood reservoir, though the dead hedge suggests it is either permanent or a regular occurrence.

The Thoresby estate has a "water meadow system" controlled by sluices, which has served to irrigate the sandy soil and increase its fertility.

The soil type is illustrated in SK6471 : Sandy bed of the River Meden in Thoresby Park.

Behind the camera is another "lake" with the top of a sluice protruding from the water.
