Berwick upon Tweed is one of the most important and impressive fortified towns of Europe. Started in 1558, the artillery ramparts survive mostly intact. The medieval and post-medieval fortifications are scheduled under the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Areas Act 1979 as amended.
