Gatehouse, 60 Holborn Viaduct
Gatehouse, 60 Holborn Viaduct
This image shows one of a quartet of pavilions or gatehouses on each corner of the Holborn Viaduct road bridge. This particular one is a replica (constructed in c. 2014) of the original that was destroyed in World War II, and subsequently built over by a 1960s office block known as Bath House. Bath House has been demolished, and replaced by a new block (60 Holborn Viaduct): this incorporates the replica. An noteworthy feature of the building is the statue of Sir Hugh Myddelton (1560-1631), the driving force behind the construction of the New River, which brought water to the capital from a source near Ware, Hertfordshire. For more the pavilions see LinkExternal link.
