Tees Newport Bridge
Tees Newport Bridge
Built in 1934, this impressive structure (grade 2 listed) is the first bridge across the Tees, upstream from the Middlesbrough Transporter Bridge. It was designed as a centre-span lift bridge to allow maritime traffic to travel further upstream, but the lifting mechanism was decommissioned in 1990. The bridge was repainted in red and silver in 2015 to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the bridge. National Cycle Network route 1 makes use of the footway on the east side.
