Airfield Bombing Decoy (Q site): DoB ID: e18483

During WWII a bombing decoy was established on what is now the Moors Valley Golf Course at Three Legged Cross. The control bunker pictured here is all that remains today of a 'Q' site for night time operation. The 'Q' site at night consisted of a line of parallel lights that appeared from the air to look like an airfield runway. They operated in tandem with a series of red obstruction lights intended to simulate an airfield conducting night flying operations. Its location was chosen primarily to decoy enemy aircraft away from RAF Ibsley SU1608 : Discovering RAF Ibsley: Overview, and as a secondary decoy for RAF Hurn.

The control bunker from which operation of the decoy facilities was conducted was well protected from all but a direct hit. Inside, two rooms were constructed from corrugated curved metal sheets supported on curved steel supports, an operations room at one end, and a smaller room with a generator at the other separated by an entrance passage. An earth mound was then built over the whole, and in its completed state, offered similar protection to that of a conventional air raid shelter. Ribbed concrete blast walls cover each of the two entrances. The control bunker is a very early type (and quite rare) constructed from a combination of borrowed parts from Nissen huts and Stanton air raid shelters.
