WWII Hampshire - RAF Beaulieu airfield: site of large hangar
A large hangar to the north west of the airfield occupied much of this site during the war, the huge concrete apron on which it stood still very much in evidence, along with the earth bank that surrounded it.

RAF Beaulieu opened in 1942 as a Class A airfield and used by 224 Squadron RAF Coastal Command flying Liberators. They were joined in their anti-submarine operations shortly after by a Canadian squadron and their 20 Handley Page Halifax aircraft on loan from Bomber Command. A Czech Liberator squadron no.311 relieved the Canadians later on that year, who were joined by 53 Liberator Squadron in September 1943 after no. 224 had left for St Eval in April of that year.

Early in 1944 saw the airfield vacated by Coastal Command in preparation for D-Day and the fighter squadrons of the 2nd Tactical Air Force with their Hawker Typhoons. They were replaced by the P47 Thunderbolts of the USAAF 365th Fighter Group who were most successful during their 4 month tour of Beaulieu, accounting for no less than 29 enemy aircraft. On one day alone on 25 June they destroyed 8 enemy fighter bombers. Four squadrons of Martin Marauders of the 323rd Bombardment Group USAAF were the next to arrive at Beaulieu, who by August 1944 had moved en-masse to France. Beaulieu ended its days with the Airborne Forces Experimental Establishment who moved from Yorkshire in December 1944, and who used a variety of aircraft during their 6 year tenure. The airfield was finally closed in 1959.
