James Shipstone founded his brewery in the 1850's in Nottingham and soon moved to this site in Basford which was then a small surburb. The company continued to grow throughout the twentieth century running many Nottingham pubs whose beer was affectionately known as Shippo's. A brew with a strong local character that was shipped out to frontline troops in the First World War. Eventually however Shipstones was sold out to the Warrington based brewery Greenall Whitley in 1978. The result was a blanded down beer supposedly more acceptable. In 1990 Greenall announced the brewery's closure.
