The Abbey Light Railway was a 2-foot gauge privately operated line, only about 400m in length, connecting the main road near Kirkstall Bridge to the edge of the grounds of Kirkstall Abbey. It ran from 1976 to 2012, when its founder, Peter Lowe, died. The line was dismantled in 2013 and the stock acquired by various other railways including Ripon District Light Railway, Yorkshire Dales Railway, Poppleton Nurseries Railway and the Welsh Highland Heritage Railway at Porthmadog.

Within a few years of closure the trackbed and station sites are already becoming overgrown, and only the edge of the platform remains visible at the northern terminus.
