St Mary the Virgin Church, The Drove, Fordwich
Difficult to photograph and leaning somewhat, as a result of a 15th-century flood this is a Grade I Listed church. Mainly Norman with some Saxon work. It was extended in the late 12th century by the addition of a north aisle and again a hundred years later when the chancel was lengthened and a west tower added. In the 18th century large box pews were installed but it remains largely untouched by the Victorians. St Mary’s closed in 1995 and passed to the care of The Churches Conservation Trust. In 1944 A Canterbury Tale (starring Dennis Price, Eric Portman and Sheila Sim) was filmed in and around Fordwich with the church enjoying a starring role that is still attracting devotees of the film. First recorded at the church in 1760 is the Fordwich Stone that dates from about AD1100 and would have formed part of the shrine of a saint. It has been suggested that it may well have formed part of the Norman shrine of St Augustine.
