Otto Overbeck. Born about 1860 in England, Otto Christoph Joseph Gerhardt Ludwig Overbeck was descended from a distinguished Dutch family. His parents were of varied nationality; his father, Joseph, was Dutch and Italian, his mother Prussian and French. He studied and became a research chemist and worked for a brewery in Grimsby. Whilst there he discovered that a by-product of the brewing process could be turned into a nutritious food. He marketed it as "Camos"(Greek for meat). It didn't sell well and the patent ran out. It was immediately copied by another manufacturer and placed on the market. Thus was born something that depending on your taste, it is regarded as either "Nectar of the Gods" or alternatively "Food of the Devil or Satan's sustenance" It is "Marmite". Otto subsequently made his money out of his invention of a machine that gave a primitive form of electro-therapy that claimed to cure many ailments of the day. With this wealth he bought this house in 1928 and filled it with all things wild, exotic, odd or interesting, which are now the exhibits in Overbeck's museum. Otto died in 1937.
