Brougham Castle Keep
Brougham Castle Keep
Brougham Castle is a mediæval building about 2 miles to the south-east of Penrith at the site, near the confluence of the rivers Eamont and Lowther, which had earlier been chosen by the Romans for a fort called Brocavum. The outer walls of the 13th century keep, which was the centre of the original castle, survive although nothing remains of the wooden floors.

The castle is scheduled as an Ancient Monument, along with the fort, as "Brougham Roman fort and Brougham Castle"(Historic England List entry Number: 1007186 LinkExternal link ). The castle was founded by Robert de Vieuxpont in the early 13th century. It was bequeathed to the Ministry of Works in the 1930s and is today maintained by its successor, English Heritage.
