Harton Low Staiths, South Shields
Harton Low Staiths, South Shields
Viewed from Shields (Market Place) Ferry terminal. The staiths were used to transfer coal from rail to collier ships for onward transportation to the London area. A National Coal Board operated electrified railway was used to bring the coal to the staiths through a tunnel under the town. The system was closed in the 1980s.
