Friden Brickworks clay pit tramway
The embankment in centre of the picture used to carry a narrow-gauge tramway connecting Friden Brickworks with its clay pits at Friden Hollow and Washmere Plantation. It operated from when the brickworks opened in 1892 until the late 1970s.
Friden Brickworks
The Friden Brickworks has been operated by DSF (Derbyshire Silica Firebrick Company) since its inception. DSF manufacture high quality refractory firebricks that can withstand the high temperatures in furnaces and industrial processes.
Operations commenced in 1892 using locally excavated Ganister rock, a volcanic rock with a high silica content.
Nowadays no rock is extracted locally. 40,000 tons are imported annually from Europe, the Americas, South Africa and China.
