SE3030 : Beware of trains

taken 5 years ago, near to Beeston, Leeds, Great Britain

Beware of trains
Beware of trains
This sign is really unnecessary. It is on the Middleton to Leeds cycle route where it runs alongside the Middleton Railway. The sign means "unguarded level crossing". But the railway itself is fenced off, does not cross the path, only has a handful of trains each weekend and they only run at about 10mph. The danger is minimal.
Middleton Railway, Leeds :: SE3031

The Middleton railway was established by an Act of Parliament in 1758. The Middleton Railway can claim to be the oldest railway in the world. The first successful, revenue earning, steam locomotives also entered service there in 1812. The railway remained in service until 1968 when Middleton Broom pit closed. The Middleton railway line never closed. It was taken over in 1960 to become the first standard gauge railway to be taken over by volunteers.

Middleton to Leeds cycle route

One of several signed cycle routes radiating from Leeds city centre and shown as "M-CC" on some maps (Middleton to City Centre), the route is about 8.5km long. Starting from the south side of Middleton, it runs through the centre of the main housing estate, through Middleton Park, alongside the Middleton Railway to Hunslet, then mostly alongside the A61 to the River Aire and then following the riverside path as far as Victoria Road just south of the city centre.
