Font, St Mary-le-Bow Church
Once the parish church of the North Bailey, St Mary-le-Bow was converted in the 1970s to a museum and heritage centre Link
.
There are two old fonts in the church. This one is carved with the date 1875. It is made of Frosterley marble, which was quarried for many centuries in Weardale, between Stanhope and Frosterley. It is not a true marble but a dark grey limestone containing fossilized corals, which can be cut and polished to decorative effect. For a close-up view of its appearance, see NZ0336 : Frosterley Marble .
