The small Highland town of Cromarty is a seaport at the tip of the Black Isle, twenty three miles to the north east of Inverness. It sits on the southern shore at the entrance to the Cromarty Firth. The town had a population of 719 at the 2001 census (Archive LinkExternal link Scottish Census Results OnLine).

This photograph is looking at Shore Street.The building in the background, with the clocktower and octagonal copper dome, is the eighteenth century courthouse and prison building on Church Street. It is now used as a museum (LinkExternal link ). It is a grade A listed building (LB23585 LinkExternal link Historic Scotland).
