Canch Park, Priorswell Road, Worksop, Notts.
In 1644 “The Canch" was mentioned in the Church Warden’s Accounts of the nearby Priory Church in relation to the provision of funding for a new bridge across The Canch. In mining dialect a canch is a sloping slice of ground associated with the removal rock and soil from the roof or floor of a roadway within a mine with the object of adjusting the gradient between adjacent workings. It seems that the long and straight mill pond within what is now the park area was created c.1820 and the area became known in this way. In 1912 a mill situated on land at the corner of Memorial Avenue and Priorswell Road was destroyed by fire and a public park was subsequently created hereabouts. All that remains of the mill is this wheelhouse in one corner of this rose garden situated off Priorswell Road. During its lifetime the original park was extended and previously boasted a lido and an aquarium. In the past the park was also a venue for special light shows on the River Ryton with bands playing.
