SK5878 : Memorial Avenue Gardens, Worksop, Notts

taken 8 years ago, near to Worksop, Nottinghamshire, England

Memorial Avenue Gardens, Worksop, Notts.
Memorial Avenue Gardens, Worksop, Notts.
These gardens, known as the Memorial Avenue gardens, were created in 1937 in remembrance of the men of Worksop who died during WWI. They were apparently designed - without any prepared plans - by Mr Charles Haslehurst, who had considerable experience gained whilst working at Shadwell Court, east of Thetford (a mid C19th formal garden, pleasure ground and walled kitchen garden) and the Royal Gardens at Buscot Park in the Faringdon/Lechlade area of Oxfordshire. Later, he because Worksop Corporation’s first Parks Superintendent. The now-redundant "Central Library and Museum" building with its domed rotunda dominates the scene, with its modern replacement in the distance. The listed former library and museum building currently houses a 'well-being and cancer charity therapies centre' , a teashop and a charity shop.
