SX9676 : The railway tunnel, Dawlish

taken 5 years ago, near to Dawlish, Devon, Great Britain

The railway tunnel, Dawlish
The railway tunnel, Dawlish
The first of a series of tunnels between Dawlish and Teignmouth. Above the tunnel there is an exposure of Permian Sandstone which shows dune bedding, dating from a time when the area was covered by a sand desert similar to the Sahara. The rocks have this red colour due to the high iron content which has oxidized to haematite.
