SH7678 : Submerged forest

Submerged forest
Submerged forest
The removal of a large quantity of sand through erosive tidal and wave action has made prominent features of large areas of stones and associated quaternary deposits. Many are associated with beds of peat and some significant pieces of 'fossil' wood. Here a trunk some 5 metres in length appears to be emerging from beneath a layer of stones. The age of the wood in similar situations (e.g. Borth-y-gest, see SN6091 : Stump art) is around 6000 years, and what may be recorded here is flooding of a low-lying forest near to the early River Conwy and subsequent inundation by the sea with the formation of a storm beach on top of the peat with its fallen and waterlogged trees. An eroding layer of peat is seen in the centre of the image, its top crowded with whelks which appear to enjoy the substrate. My eTrex handheld GPS device is placed upon the trunk for scale.
