During week-ends in September and October 2016, the East Coast Main Line was closed north of Newcastle for engineering works. Accordingly, Virgin Trains East Coast (VTEC) services diverted over Newcastle - Carlisle, adding somewhat to journey times to/from Edinburgh and King's Cross.

DB Schenker livered diesel locomotive 67015 drags train 1S13, the 11.00 passenger service from King's Cross to Edinburgh, towards Upper Denton level crossing.
