The Old Tolbooth, Lerwick
Looking along the lifeboat pier towards the Old Tolbooth (tollbooth). The Tolbooth was built circa 1767-70 on the site of a 17th century predecessor. The building is 2 storeys and 5 bays on a rectangular plan. The walls are harled with sandstone detailing. It is a category B listed building (LB37247
Link Historic Scotland). Although the listing text states that "Removal of the clock tower was a sad loss for the harbour and town skyline", the building was thankfully restored in 2005 and the original clock tower which had been removed in 1927 was reinstated. The Tolbooth served as Lerwick’s Post Office from 1878 until 1910 (
