Shugborough Hall was home to the Anson family. The house was handed over to the nation in the 1960 in lieu of death duties.

During the Great War JRR Tolkien spent time in the training camps on Cannock Chase and would have been familiar with the hall and village of Great Haywood (Tavrobel).

Tolkien describes the home of Elven Lord Gilfanon at the confluence of two rivers Gruir (Sow) and Afros (Trent) at the Grey (Essex) Bridge.
