SZ3783 : The Thimble, Hanover Point

taken 17 years ago, near to Brook, Isle of Wight, England

The Thimble, Hanover Point
The Thimble, Hanover Point
The stone marker at Hanover point was built to ensure that shells fell into the sea when practice firing from Freshwater battery. Prior to it being built, in poor visibility, some shells were landing on the land across the bay. Provided that the guns were aimed to the south of the marker, shells would always fall into the sea.
