Effigies of Sir Richard and Eleanor Croft
Effigies of Sir Richard and Eleanor Croft
Effigies of Sir Richard and Eleanor Croft in St Michael's church at Croft Castle. Sir Richard died in 1509 having survived the dangers of the Wars of the Roses. He fought at the nearby Battle of Mortimer's Cross on the side of Edward IV and was rewarded with High Office for his Yorkist loyalty. He was a great survivor and prospered under Henry VII, the first Tudor monarch, despite being party to the execution of Owen Tudor, Henry's grandfather. Under Henry VII he held the office of Treasurer of the Royal Household and a Privy Counsellor. He was also steward to Prince Arthur, Henry eldest son, at Ludlow Castle. Prince Arthur's untimely death at the age of 15 in 1502 resulted in his younger brother becoming King Henry VIII in 1509.
