St James' Church, Cooling
St James' Church, Cooling
St James Church at Cooling is one of the churches which it is thought featured in the opening scenes of Great Expectations (St Mary's at Higham is the other). See more at: LinkExternal link (Archive LinkExternal link ) This is the view that Dickens would have seen of the churchyard looking to the west tower.

The nave, chancel and the lower part of the tower were part of the initial building phase stretching into the 14th century. The tower was completed to the height at which it now stands by about 1400. 'Pip's graves' are just to the right of the south porch and out of sight in this view.

St James Church is now looked after by the Churches Conservation Trust - see LinkExternal link
