Now named after the Gillett & Johnston bellfoundry, which used to stand directly behind the pub, it was previously known as the Mailcoach, and the Coach & Horses.
When the mail was carried by mailcoach, this was a changing point for the horses. The stabling for the horses still exists in the small yard behind the pub.

The pub is now for sale, with planning permission to build flats at this location.
