From Birkett Road. The interesting square building is shown in ST3062 : Birnbeck Pier and old signalling station 1995 and ST3062 : Birnbeck Pier tollhouse. The former identifies it as a former tram signalling station. I think the toll house lodge described at LinkExternal link must be the lower building to the right. I'm not sure that much of the turnstiles or gates can be seen, but just in case, here's a link to their listed description LinkExternal link . A colourfully-decorated barricade separates the toll structures from the signalling station.
