The Widows and Bairns sculpture at Eyemouth
This striking bronze memorial at the promenade was sculpted by Jill Watson to commemorate the 129 fishermen from the town who perished in the Great Storm of 14th October 1881. The small bronze figures represent the widows and children left behind. Men were also lost from the nearby villages of St Abbs, Burnmouth and Cove bringing the total of lost souls to 189. For a view of the original memorial, see NT9464 : Eyemouth memorial to the fishing disaster of 1881.
